Why does.....

Q: Why does my hair break off more around my face and hairline?

A: The reason people see more breakage around the face and hairline is because when we style our hair, that is where we put most of the focus. When we flat iron our hair, we make sure that around our face is straighter than anything else. Same with curling. Why is that? Its because that is what other people see! When we have a picture taken, if it is just a straight on shot the only part of the hair that is seen in the photo is what is around our faces.

Tips: Make sure the flat iron or curling iron you are using has a heat or temperature setting. If you are seeing breakage, then turn down the temp!! Also when flat ironing, keep the iron moving smoothly over the hair. Do not hold it in one spot or you will see lines and eventually more breakage. Remember to use a heat protector when using any heated styling tool! Matrix makes a great heat protector!!

How To Choose The Right Product For Your Hair Type.

I know it takes trial and error to figure out what products are right for you. Should I use this mousse or that gel? Will this leave my hair oily or dry? At some point we all go through these questions when we are looking for new product to use. And sometimes it is a trial and error. Not all products work for everyone. But I have compiled a guide that will hopefully help out next time you are deciding on which product to purchase.

Fine Hair
Fine hair is easily weighed down. So be careful not to use too much of any product. Usually no more than a dime size of gel, cream, or paste.

When it comes to leave-in-conditioners, people with fine hair should step lightly! Test the consistency before purchasing. A more watery consistency is what I recommend. I use Sexy Hair's leave-in-conditioner spray on my clients because it is light weight and still leaves the hair soft and healthy.

Mousse is typically a light weight styling aid. I recommend mousse over gel to my clients with fine hair because it is airy and does not weigh the hair down when using the right amount.

Hairspray is another issue I tend to see with my clients. With fine, thinner hair a strong hold hairspray tends to take away from the lift and life of the hair after I have styled it. Try a more medium hold aerosol spray to keep the body in your hair.

Normal Hair
With normal texture hair it really is more trial and error. You just have to see what works best for you. It also depends on the style you are going for. If you want more volume and movement then use lighter product such as mousse and styling creme. I use Kenra Styling Creme 10 for my clients with normal texture hair. It has a little weight to it so it keeps the hair tame but does not weigh it down.
If you want the sleek straight look you can use something a little heavier such as a straightening gel. Also after flat ironing you can lightly apply a shine gloss to keep the sleek look.

When it comes to hairspray it just depends on your preference. if you want movement the use a medium hold hairspray. If you want your hair to stay put all day (usually shorter styles) then use a max hold spray.

Coarse Hair
Coarse hair can sometimes be hard to tame. Gel usually works best for coarse thick hair. It weighs the hair down a bit more and give it more control. For short hair that is thick and coarse a wax mousse will also work well, such as Kenra's Mousse Wax.

If your hair tends to frizz easily try using a shine serum. I use one pump of shine serum on wet hair before I apply any other product. this helps tame the frizz while blow drying instead of doing it all with the flat iron or curling iron.

Hope this has helped some of you!

Why Professional??

Raise your hand if you have ever been to Walmart or the grocery store to buy your hair color! Don't worry my hand is up too!! At some point most women will turn to "box color", but most also learn their lesson. I sure did. When I was in High School I turned my hair a nice orange shade a week before my senior prom, and it wasn't pretty ;) I quickly headed out to get it "fixed". Having a corrective color service will most of the time cost you at least TWICE of what you would have paid for your hairdresser to color your hair in the first place.

Professional stylists take many things into consideration when mixing your color formula. Especially when you already have color on your hair.
Here are just a handful of factors:
  • Natural Color (which will be the regrowth)
  • Existing hair color
  • Skin tone
  • Density of the hair
  • Porosity of the hair
All of these factors (and more) will determine how the color will look on you and how your hair will "take" the color. It is not as simple as picking a color in the swatch book and simply applying that one color.(In most cases)

Example: One of my clients comes every 4-5 weeks to have her regrowth covered and ends refreshed. I have to use a separate formula for her hairline that is 1 shade lighter than the formula I use for the rest of the regrowth and to refresh the ends. Why? Because for some reason her hairline sucks up the color and will turn out darker than the rest of her hair.

Point: Everyone's hair is different, and your hairdresser can customize your color experience for the best results!

Happy Hair Day

Let me introduce myself.....

Hey guys and gals! If you don't know me my name is Megan Simpson. I am a cosmetologist in Mt Airy and I have been working in this industry for almost 2 years. I love every aspect of the stylist world! Hair was always an interest of mine since I was young, so I made the choice to sign up for beauty school in 2008. After 2 years of the cosmetology program at Surry Community (which I highly recommend if you are interested!) I graduated and signed up for my state boards.
Right now I am working on building my business and clientele (which does take time and patience) in Mt Airy. This is an ever growing and expanding industry so continuing education is one of my priorities! The sky is the limit and you can go as high as you want as a hairdresser.

With this blog I hope to reach people I normally wouldn't. I want to answer your questions and help with your daily hair dilemmas. So feel free to message me on facebook or shoot me an email!
Have a happy hair day :)
